Design Date 2023
Site Area 6795 sqm
Total Gross Area 150 sqm

It was designed as a twin house consisting of two dwellings that two business people working in the healthcare sector wanted to build on their common land. It is designed as a reclusive place in nature where they and their families can get rid of the stress caused by busy work schedule to be used on weekends and holidays.

The land is located five-six kilometers south of Izmit Bay, on a hill overlooking the bay view.   It has an area of approximately 7 acres. Property is in the landslide area and the building area suitable for construction is only 250 m2. According to the development plans, the construction boundaries are in the shape of a truncated triangle and site is inclined. It is under the influence of strong northern winds (north and northeast) at a very important time of the year. Southwest winds  are less effective. The land is on the roadside and on a hill. The direction where the northern winds are effective also has a breathtakingly beautiful view of the bay. The most challenging subject of the design may be summarized as creating open spaces that focuses on the spectacular view while at the same time have to protected from the wind.

The landslide-free borders of the land also determined the contours of the building. Living areas and the kitchen are located on the ground floor, overlooking the view. The bedrooms are designed on the basement floor, with three sides open and the south side buried.

The ground floor consists of three main parts. Kitchen, indoor living area and outdoor living area. The focal point of these places is the bay view. Depending on the direction of the wind, the open living area is protected from the wind through the barrier provided by the closed living area. Wide sliding windows are designed to create closed and open spaces and not obstruct the view.

Since it is assumed that the house will be used on weekends and holidays and sometimes will not be used for a long time, protection shutters are designed on the facades. These shutters have large surfaces and can be opened and closed with a servo motor. Shutters completely cover the windows, ensuring the protection and security of the house from external impacts.

The residential area is entered by vehicle from the southeast corner of the land.   The ground floor level is 3 m below the road. The inclined road passes in front of the doors of two dwellings and reaches the parking lot in the west. Two stairs on the east and west connect the garden area at the ground floor level to the garden area at the basement floor. There is also a ramp for disabled people in the west.

On the basement floor there is the master bedroom and its utility units, two adult bedrooms, laundry room and toilets. Its connection to the ground floor is provided by an internal staircase. This staircase reaches to the terrace roof. The terrace is considered as a potential area of use in the future.

To prevent the south side of the basement from coming into contact with the soil, a gallery with of 1 meter was created by along the long side of the building (28 m). The south of this gallery was designed as a retaining wall to absorb the soil load. This place is also considered as the distribution space of electrical and mechanical installations. This design has the feature of facilitating the maintenance and repair of the installation. Water tank, hydrophore, water purification equipment etc. are designed at the western end of the gallery and are connected.

An open-air fireplace and seating group were designed in the north-west of the building, overlooking the view.
